On May 9th 2017 the Diocese held a meeting with all priests to present the new policy for transgender students. On May 11th the policy was presented to all Catholic School principals of the diocese. Behold, the document:

Has my church forgotten that homosexuality and wearing of women’s garments are considered as abominations in the bible we adhere to?
I might understand the church’s latitude for those who are intersex or who have had reassignment surgery but that is not the same as that being proposed is it?

All that is being proposed, as I read the document, is that if parents ask to enroll a transgendered student in the school that there is a process in place to determine whether or not the school can accommodate the child. In most dioceses, that accommodation amounts to the child using the faculty restroom. If the family objects, then they will need to find a different school for their child. Not sure what all of the fuss is about here.

Remember the time that there was a huge scandal in the Catholic Church, priests sexually abusing children and teenage boys? That just happened. Should schools be sending kids who are exploring their sex and/or sexuality into the faculty bathroom?

And yet, those priest who abused the children were not exploring their sex or sexuality, where they? But, if I understand you correctly, because a transgendered student might cause a problem, all of them should be judged accordingly. Luckily for the church we didn’t do that to the priests. Then again, maybe we should. While we have no documented cases of a transgendered child in a catholic school causing a problem in a restroom, we have ample evidence of catholic priests molesting children. Using your logic, maybe instead of banning transgendered students from our schools, we should be banning the clergy. After all, if your real concern is the safety of the children and somehow one transgendered student must take on the guilt of all, then should not that same standard be applied to priests?
It would seem that anything less would be the epitome of hypocrisy!

Personally, I have been back and forth on whether there is a fuss or not. Ultimately, I have come to the conclusion that there is a fuss to be kicked up here. (1) The policy should not be at a parish level; it should be at a Diocesan level FOR SO MANY REASONS. (2) There comes the issue of scandal and poor example, and teaching people appropriate Truth of creation. (3) What happens when priest X allows this, and priest Y following up says, ‘no, we cannot’. It in essence opens a door that another priest will be shot down trying to close because in his appropriate conscience this is a scandalous example of the Truth of God’s creation. (4) Accompaniment: how can we accompany such folks if when we dare to speak the Truth there is an uproar that we are being ‘un-pastoral’ (I WOULD LOVE to see how St. Paul would handle this) to even begin to teach the Truth of God’s creation. (5) Would not a lawsuit erupt.
And those are just the tip of the iceberg.
This whole thing if it is innocent, is at best naïve about the trouble that lies ahead.
What a mess… and I still would love to see what St. Paul would do with that.

The document you posted with the transgender policy is unreadable – the print is too small and some of the pages are blurred – this is too serious a matter to have a copy like this.

We fully agree! The diocese has a facebook page, a website, and a bi weekly magazine but they intended this document to be for a select group of people. They refuse to release the PDF copy of it. They don’t answer phone calls, most emails, or letters. If you can get a PDF copy we will gladly post it. Please get started today.
